who have labored unselfishly tor democratic sue as and are we proud of the record of king in the house of representatives and hawlins law lins in the senate whose distinguished and intelligent id bora utah in influence to the forefront of the states their language and their moth eg have been distorted an d misconstrued by an unfair and partisan pre they anve written names high among the valued arants of the nation anero hak been much apparent joy cv pressed among the republicans owing to the fact that there have been sporadic cases of certain alleged demo brats who suffering from softening of th conscience have abandoned our party and united with the republican organization I 1 have spoken of these as sporadic cadei they have occurred at mated and regular intervals in the different section of the state alie cases have been so peculiar and they haie occurred at times so opportune for the enemy that one is impeller d to inquire did anyone et these inen apart for this particular work have they been guad I 1 cd into the republican camp in furtherance of any compact made at any tim by anyone to swing utah into the re column and to keep it there 1 Is it not a little that defection exists in utah anil in no other section there are AO things connected with these sudden conversions that give one food tot thought li there not danger that tho thin may be overdone and the people not be influenced by these cup posed jyll wether who by hard work have succeeded in pressing the collar of the silver king over their COOT what is there today that attracts these tramp politicians to the republican party have they become enamored by the ways and means that controlled the list legislature of utah do they think that hereafter they will any of them bo very important factors in our political eife have they not reflected that in this high altitude and pure air folks do not take kindly to the apostate whether religious or political one eminent gentleman whose political principles beem to have ball bearings greased with graphite or some other metal de 0 W POWERS nominated king dared that he flopped he believed in protection and he chooses the time when the republican party is beginning to advocate tariff reduction W lose their votes tut they can no longer do us harm by claiming to be that which they never were and never could be democrats from principle the fat smoke rising from the camp arca of the enemy tickled their nostrils in public offices through democratic votes nearly every one of them grazed on the political range until the grass grew and then started for the other side for fresh offices and renewed opportunity to live from the emoluments of official life so we wish these pot hunters good luck and say to them that their defection has not caused the cataclysm in our ranks that they anticipated one of these political airships the morning after he had abandoned our party met a democrat in fealt lake and said to him the democratic party is sick yes eaid the democrat but it will recover it got rid ot considerable bile yesterday A man once thrust his finger into a tub of water and drawing it out found to his surprise that no hole remained lema ined we hiis experience to those who have filled the papers with reasons that do not otate the mother which impelled them to unite with the republicans six years of republican power has demonstrated that the trusts have nothing to fear from the republican party because the republican party is boned by the trusts why not say by legislation that no industry that can ship goods to europe and there sell them cheaper than they are sold in america where are shall longer be protected by tariff legislation why not put these giant concerns into competition with the world why longer tax the people by making them pay ano prices to ohp monopolies that have according to republican admission grown stronger than the law the people are beginning to suspect that therein lies a remedy even republicans public ans are beginning to insist that these giant concerns should not longer have special privileges the republicans of iowa and idaho have declared that the trusts should no longer receive the benefits of alie tariff laws and the sentiment Is growing that the democratic remedy is plain speedy and adequate the democracy says repeal those provisions of alie protective tariff laws which give to the combines their tremendous power alie position of the republicans upon the tariff question is confusing heretofore whoever suggested a reduction of the tariff on sugar has been denounced as a traitor 0 o the interests 0 the state and as one striking a blow at the new industry in tho state the sugar beat industry bounties were demanded and voted by the legislature and we were led to believe that the business was struggling along to secure a foothold but now comes the republican senator from utah joining hands with a republican president ana a blow at this industry by a plan to reduce the tariff on sugar in tit interest of cuba and then coers T C cutler manager of the utah sugar kompany om pany and declares that reduction of the tariff in sugar 20 per cent will not affect the beet industry sn the slightest degree he goos farther and says eliat the stockholder of the sugar company have n moi than they originally paid binl Is this not a surprising statement does it disclose that the wt sugar farmers leave been receiving their behare of the tariff or does it thoa that capital has been the does it show that there has been the need of tariff protection in the past ahat was claimed with this disclosure concerning the sugar industry how do we know that tho caim for protection for other industries is an honest clim cl im it is manifest mAnt fest that the lime
