be postmaster mayor glasmann returned this morning from a three weeks trip cast and to a standard reporter he said he had had a pleasant trip and while his special mii sion cast was to secure the associated floss franchise for a morning paper at ogdan yet at the same time he visited many cities for the express purpose of studying questions relating to the executive department of cities THE MORNING SUN did you have much trouble in securing the associated aroas franchise t tho reporter well I 1 may say yes and no I 1 had no idea of going after the franchise until I 1 learned that the salt lake berald wanted to secure the exclusive franchise for the morning paper at ogden I 1 did not like ilia idea of a salt lake paper owning a morning paper and the exclusive right to run one in ogden with full dispatches the salt lake tribune and herald both protested against granting the franchise to me but I 1 found no protests against the application of joel priest for and in behalf of the salt lake herald As an I 1 came to the conclusion that there was an effort on the part of the salt lake morning papers to control the morning field in baden and that belief caused me to seek the franchise and start a new paper though I 1 really dont care about going in the newspaper business again the name of mr J 11 clark the gentleman who was going to start the democratic daily also came up before the board of directors but I 1 easily won the franchise against all opposition when will the ogdan sun shine for the first oh well a day or two dont cut any particular difference but one day inside of two or three weeks will sec alie ogden morning sun rise and daily sunday included thereafter will it be bigger than the standard well hardly no newspaper can como into ogden and throw the standard Stan daid in the shade with the start that paper has alie standard i a very good paper much better and larger than cities of ogdena me have anywhere in the nation anaconda montana alone excepted the standard is ahead of the city but so will be the sun which will not be behind the standard one bit I 1 shall not strive at least to start in to excel the standard but the latter will know that the sun will shine and daily at that ATTENDED SAMPSONS tell m about your visit to washington continued alie reporter oil that had no significance other than to put in ft few daya spine time while waiting on business developments hut while there I 1 attended the funeral of admiral sampson the admission to the church on tho occasion was by card and I 1 biad a very hard time to secure that card of admission the naval commission in charge was very choice in its distribution of admission tickets I 1 had tried congressmen and senators but all they could do was to refer me to the committee I 1 used my title as mayor and speaker of the legislature but it waa all of no avail finally I 1 introduced myself as editor of the morning sun and on being couched vouched for as such by mr E M hood the naval representative of the associated press I 1 secured the much coveted ticket 1 I never worked so hard in all my life for an admission card I 1 would gladly have given 1000 for it in fact I 1 offered that I 1 shall keep it as keepsake here is the card plain and unan admit to church of the covenant may oth 1002 pew no five thousand people stood at the doors of the church clamoring to get in only two third of the aca lulled but those seated were supposed to be close friends and relatives of admiral sampson and the naval and army officers with their staffs the diplomatic representatives from foreign countries an dreaded in their official robea and trappings the supreme judges cabinet officers and the president 0 the united states the latter sat nearest to the coffin of the dead admiral it was all a gorgeous gathering and most conspicuous among them were admiral dewey and general miles and their staffs the most notable incident was the failure of the minister to preach the funeral sermon just before the sermon was to come mrs thomas C boyea bang a solo some kleet day bye and bye she is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and expressive singers ever heard in washington she is said to be very religious and money and the stage do not tempt her well the words of the song indicated that sampsons Samp sons victories and life had not been appreciated etc but at the close of each verse the singer predicted that it would be isome sweet day bye and byc when the sweet singer sat down there was hardly a dry eye in the house the effect was marvelous and the minister arose laid hh sermon aside offered a brief prayer and the services came to a close 1 wanted to hear the sermon and learn what the preacher would fray of sampson but mrs noyes eang the grandest seimon I 1 ever heard and as great a partisan as I 1 have been of behley I 1 left the church of the covenant that day feeling that sampsons Samp sons great work had not been fully appreciated my object in and investigating the administrative and executive affairs in the different cities was principally to study the sunday saloon question gambling the social evil and the duties and powers of mayors of cities in ogden city that officer is but a fig ure head the city council in the pait has usurped the executive aa well as the affairs of the city government but your interview is enough for today some jiin when you are short of news come to me and 1 will give you my discoveries aad ideas on saloons gambling social evils etc THE OG CE but how ogden insisted ius isted the reporter s i 1 I know little about that congressman sutherland informed me that itoe ert SIr tyes thomas dav E T woolcy and geo M alanson ll anson were all well in lie asked me about each man and I 1 gave them all first class standing and told the congressman that I 1 could bo liappa with either as postmaster he asked me who in my opinion was entitled to the pont office I 1 told him that the servi edwin disc for the party as chairman for two distinct terms was entitled to reward but as sir dix was not a candidate his appointment wan out of the question mr sutherland aard that senator jearos had requested him to make no endorsement indorsement indor until the senator could reach washington and he had granted that courtesy to the senator I 1 left washington before the senator arrived but I 1 am inclined to think thomas dach will be the nest postmaster of ogden if senator kearns has the appointing or in dorsing of the applicant M it is a fact that it is a rule that the congressman recommends the appointment of except in the city the senator lives but I 1 am advised that even in washington every once in a while there is an exception to this rule especially if the senator is a great power in the united states senate and with the tion |
