september the branch is for the purpose of opening means of transportation por tation for the enon mineral deposit of that falious district there Is a great demand for stock cars in which to ship sheep east to the chicago and omaha markets where there Is now a great demand for the spring lambs and mutton sheep the union pacific and other roads on account of the immense traffic in other lines are meeting with some difficulty in meeting this shortage in stock care and all the sheep owners seem to want to ship at once one of the singular sights to be wit hessed by tourists on the southern pa Is the big annual pow plute indiana which Is now in progress at wadsworth and the spectacle possesses such attraction for the eight seers that it deepa the trainmen busy to prevent leaving any interested passengers the town la crowded with the savages in gala attire of overalls bright calico and paint it Is estimated that over 1500 are taking part in the affair the stages which ply between raw lans and the various camps of the battle lake mining district in wyoming are said to be run on the fastest schedule in the west they run nine miles an hour crossing three divides that rise from to feet in the 58 miles of the route there are tour changes of horses making 48 head of forsea necessary about horses are used in freight traffic on the same route it Is through this section that the union pacific Is considering running a branch the southern pacific engines are hauling some big trains up the west side of the sierras lately and tho heavy grade and load sometimes weaken tho rolling stock the passenger which should have come in at last evening was one hour and a halt late on account of the having been pulled from a car of bonded silk consigned from the orient to new york the car was found to be damaged this side of the range and a coupling of chains was made the draw bead and car could not be repaired as the car could not be opened until a station could bo reached whore there was a united states inspector the car waa repaired here under the inspectors 6 supervision per vision ana was sent east on the union pacific the no 4 east bound being delayed in departure the extension of the colorado south ern from fort colllns north to cheyenne to connect with the cheyenne northern Is contemplated tor the near future this would open up a direct connection for the former road between pueblo and the iron and oil fields of wyoming this movement Is no doubt part of a plan to shut out the burlington from obtaining any of the ore traffic over its recently completed extension it the iron fields continue to de celop into the bonanza expected there Is no doubt that a lively freight war will be on between the union pacific the colorado southern and the burlington the union pacific now has an agreement with the colorado southern by which it handles the freight from a the cheyenne northern between cheyenne denver corporations AS MORAL AGENTS something happens every now and again in the management of the affairs of corporations which raises the question how far can a corporation legitimately regulate the private habits and personal conduct of its employed emp loyes without infringing upon personal rights and liberties and to what extent may its influence be successfully used as a moral agent this question Is brought to the front now through an order issued by the chicago and rock island railroad company to ahe that no one shall be employed by it who is addicted to smoking cigarettes nearly every railroad company in the country gas a similar regulation regarding the drinking habit which Is strictly enforced the reason assigned for these regulations Is that the habits against which they are directed are nerve destroyers and impair the usefulness of indulgers indulge rs in the service in which they are employed A GOOD RAILROAD FIELD the counties of routt and rio blanco in northwestern colorado are without railroad connections and the citizens of that locality are hopeful of a branch from either the rio grande or midland or one of the lines north of denver the section that would be tapped abounds in coal timber precious metals and fine grazing there is a chance for a remunerative traffic now which would be greatly increased by the stimulation of a railroad connection many practicable routes are open for choice to any company seeking this field during the recent agitation which credited the D R G with the intention to extend through to salt lake city or ogden this section would have been tapped along its southern border but the move on the part of this road Is now highly improbable considering the operations now being undertaken by it in southern and western colorado the road Is pushing along the arrangements range ments for commencing work on the two branches into the san luis valley and wet mountain region and on the north gunelson Gunn lson branch work on he first of these branches will commence next week orders for and yes for th track haying been in conle time and the operations will be prosecuted very energetically te boffl bials hoping to hav e the road plated during the early harvot par Vot ohp winter while mostly designed to open rio grande territory these contemplated branches lyall permit the road by further combinations to candle all traffic obtained through their completion with greater facility two of the branches will reach a rich mining and agricultural country while the third will give railroad connection with a fruit country already noted for its products should the branch southwest gouth west through new mexico and then back into southeastern utah be built the often expressed plan to build on to los angeles may become an assured fact but these operations set at rest for some time any ideas the company had of extending to salt lake platho atho ashley country |
