Show its contradiction DEMOCRACY as seen by a republican ogden altah july 16 1900 editor of the ogden standard it seems strange how quickly the human race forgets the past it Is amusing to read and compare the principles of the democratic party of today with the principles advocated from 61 to 65 then they advocated the doctrine both with their mouth and with the gun more strongly with the later weapon that four million people in this grand old republic of ours should be and remain slaves in bondage of the worst type they fought the government tor five years to attain that end what do they say now that the same government and same political party are trying to enslave the people of patriotic cuba and the philippine islands and they are attempting to run a political campaign and make the people belleve they are honest and mean to give those people freedom when they get the power in hands can any honest american believe they would do any such thing look at the history since the tour million blacks of the south were treed have they been treated in the land of senator jones senator tillman and other noted democrats as free men not one of those people has any freedom whatever no rights that a democrat respects then it that be true what assurance have the people that the other races would receive any tetter treatment at their hands it looks to me that charity ought to begin at home and that the party of freedom ought to tree its own people in the states where the democracy controls before it talks of going to the philippines to tree the rebels there there Is one other thing that seems strange in connection with this party of freedom and that Is their love tor silver when mr cleveland was elected president on the anti tariff platform of 1892 he had both branches of congress with him and in june following his election he called an extra session of congress tor the purpose of repealing the robber tariff laws of the republicans but no he did not mention it he said the trouble is too much silver silver Is worth too much the government Is getting poor paying 84 cents per ounce for silver the congress convened and repealed the silver law and reduced the price from 84 to 60 cents four years later after they found out that the silver question couii get some votes from the western states they got out and declared that silver was the only thing that the country needed and when told of their acts against silver in 93 they say cleveland Is a republican and always was what about the congressmen and senators who passed the anti silver bill it was a unanimous thing so far as the democrats were concerned now voters can you depend on such a party tor freedom of the oppressed either in the united states or elsewhere or can you depend upon their silver promises every intelligent voter knows that the party has had since 1865 to show their love for freedom of the human family and you can hardly pick up a paper without seeing where some unfortunate negro in the south has been lynched or burned at the stake in the states where the leaders of democracy reside and hold power but you never eee where there Is any of the mobs punished for the hundreds of lives they have taken without due process of law the other planks in their platform are equally as absurd they talk about imperialism and simply to frighten some one into voting tor their aggregation they even go so far as to invite some boers or people from south africa to join them in their powwow pow wow thinking by that means they will get some german republican to vole their way but I 1 am thinking they will get very few the german Is generally pretty level headed and dods not take to soft soap very readily I 1 wonder how much longer some democrats will persist in calling them beaves republicans I 1 would never vote tor a party that I 1 was ashamed of or afraid to hear its damek H E STEELE |
