has been succeeded by a misunderstanding and consequent controversy over the salt palace association empress jose phine jewel s most woman will that too be permitted to grow into a scandal this question was frequently asked today by reason of an occurrence at the salt palace last night the association answered the query most emphatically this afternoon by saying it will not the occurrence referred to resulted from the refusal on the part of mr davig owner or former owner of the jewels to permit mr J H priest the west temple street merchant to cast a block of votes lor miss jenkens a young lady employed in his etore in speaking of the matter today mr priest said 1 I had cast blocks of votes before and there was no protest for instance I 1 had just put in one block of 24 lor miss jenkens and they were accepted all right amt when I 1 tried to vote ten they were thrown out by mr davis who became very angry now I 1 would ilka to know what Is the matter can I 1 or can I 1 not cast more than one vote at a time the judges permitted not only myself but others to vote mora than one then all at once they shut off on roe but allow others to continue voting more than one at a atme why should there be a distinction I 1 get my votes honorably every ona Is purchased and paid for I 1 keep a store and my patrons bring them in and leave them I 1 took my rejected votes home with me and will offer them again tonight with about one hundred more it the judges refuse to accept them all well and good if they apply the same rule to others but I 1 think they should ba accepted as heretofore at beat until some other rule is adopted experiments IN ALKALI LANDS deseret news thomas H wears and F D gardner experts in the soil division of the department part ment of agriculture at washington who arrived here last july with instructions to conduct a series of experiments on the nature of the waste alkali lands west of the jordan river have completed about one half of the prescribed work mr mears was ordered to greeley colo shortly after their arrival here and his place was filled by professor john stewart chief chemist of the utah agricultural experiment peri ment station the primary object of the investigation of the nature of the soil Is to ascertain the kind of salts that prevent the propagation of plant life the amount present in the soil and the most plausible plan of ridding it of the deleterious let erious substances so that the lands may be reclaimed and made useful tor agriculture the present method of investigation consists of making frequent bolings borings n the soil to a depth ot six feet and then determining the percentage of alkali in each foot of soli from the surface to the bottom of the boring and when advisable ane percentage ot black alkali or carbonate will also be determined ter mined the bolings borings are made at intervals sufficiently frequent to enable the investigators vesti gators to prepare an underground map of the entire district west of the jordan river in addition to this a map indicating the texture of the soil will be outlined in its relation to the reclaiming of the land the soil map is especially important it shows the ease or difficulty with which water will percolate through the soil and carry away soluble salts in the drainage water nearly all the salts found in the alkali lands are insoluble the insoluble ones work no injury to plant or vegetable life the salts are varied in nature and are more or less abundant carbonate of aoda Is present in almost every locality but sodium chloride predominates carbonate of lime is present and although very soluble is harmless there arc also present many other metallic elements but they are seldom considered in alkali problems the present analysis Is to determine 1 the quality not the quantity that Is the total amount of salts that go into the solution when the soil is saturated Is determined but no attempt Is made to identify the salta except la the case of sodium carbonates Is doter malel both as to abuy and quantity the method used in making the surveys Is known as the electrical method of determining soluble salts it was devised at washington by the division of soils department and is used in the held A new method of drainage is used by gardner mears and stewart and the present series of experiments will continua until oct 15 hears and gardner will then return to washington and complete the laboratory experiments the result of these investigations will be embodied in a department publication and ii i i the outcome will be watched with great interest as it looks to the reclaiming of all the alkali lands west ot the bourl river |
