Show RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS PRINT BOOKS FOR BLIND On of the most appealing services that la carried forward by women volunteers vol-unteers nnder the American Red Cross Is that of transcribing popular and scientific books into Braille for reading read-ing by the blind. This work was started at Evergreen hospital, wher blind veterans of ths World War were sent after tbe Armistice. The Red Cross now has 1,155 volunteer volun-teer Braille transcribers, and last year they produced 442 tltlas In 1,849 vol' nines, or 178,000 pages of Braille. The majority of the books go to the Library of Congress and public libraries li-braries throughout tbe country,, although al-though aome of tho books go to schools for the blind and, In a few instances, test books are transcribed tor some individual scholar io order ta help him complete bis course In som study. The work Is supported from the Red Cross Roll Call for members which occurs each year from Armistice Day to Thanksgiving Day. |
