RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS PRINT BOOKS FOR BLIND On of the most appealing services that la carried forward by women vol-unteers nnder the American Red Cross Is that of transcribing popular and scientific books into Braille for read-ing by the blind. This work was started at Evergreen hospital, wher blind veterans of ths World War were sent after tbe Armistice. The Red Cross now has 1,155 volun-teer Braille transcribers, and last year they produced 442 tltlas In 1,849 vol' nines, or 178,000 pages of Braille. The majority of the books go to the Library of Congress and public li-braries throughout tbe country,, al-though aome of tho books go to schools for the blind and, In a few instances, test books are transcribed tor some individual scholar io order ta help him complete bis course In som study. The work Is supported from the Red Cross Roll Call for members which occurs each year from Armistice Day to Thanksgiving Day. LABOR HEAD URGES SUPPORT OF RED CROSS "Invariably It Is tbs masses of the people which suffer most when disas-ters ' occur," stated William Green, president ot the American Federation of Labor, recently. "Because they suffer n.ost and be-cause of their helplessness, the minis tratlons of the Red Cross organization take on added significance and impor-tance. No doubt many lives among these particular groups are saved through the prompt servlno which this organization gives. . "Because tbe American Federation oi Labor appreciates this fact, we have supplemented the appeal ot the Ameri-can Red Cross at each Roll Call period tor memberships from the great mass ot working men and women and their ramllles. NURSES ENROLLED WITH RED CROSS FOR SERVICE Enrolled wltb the Nursing Service of the American Red Cross at Wash-lugto-are 49,000 nurses, qualified under the society's regulations, who may be summoned to service in time ot disaster or other emergency. From the Red Cross enrollment were assigned 20,000 nurses in the World War. ' These Red Cross nurse are the standing reserve ot the Army and Nary Nurse Corps ot the United States, and are also called upon for service In other governmental health services. AIRPLANES DROP TONS OF FOOD DURING FLOOD Army, Nary and Alabama National Guard airplanes delivered twenty five tons of supplies furnished by the American Red Cross to flood refugee who were completely cut off from any other aid, during the serious floods In four southeastern States early this spring. The three services made an average of fifty flights a day, delivering medl-- cine, food, clothing and blanket. Most of the supplies were dropped to the refugee who were Isolated on ' hill tops and high ground, by tbe flood water. Naval aviators made a total of 115 flights during the flood period, em-bracing 15,000 miles.
