Show if! CITY JAIL Through the prompt action of Mis. John Grelner. Saturday night, Sam Brown, a suspected Torgcr was ar-rested ar-rested and landed In the city bastilo for tafo keeping. Check on Read Bros. The forged check was made out on J. B. Read Bros. Company, the hai newsmakers, and was for tho amount of 21 85. Artcr deducting for two weeks' room rent In advance Mrs. Grenler paid Smith the balance or $15. 85 In cash. The man's arrest took place and the entire amount of cash paid over by the woman was recovered re-covered by the police. When searched at the police headquarters head-quarters two other checks were found in the man's pockets. Both of theso are believed to be forgoiies. One was made out on First National Bank paper to Sam Komenlch for the sum of $:1".!.S5 It was purported to havo been timed by p. II. Steffenson. This check had not yet been indorsed. Other Checks Found. The other check on Pingree Bank paper was made payable to the same Sam Komenlch iu. the sum of $21.83 and the name of P. J. Moran, the well-known contractor appeared at the bottom This' is also believed to be a forgery although the police have r. t vet 'ascertained the facte from Mr. Morpn There were also found In Smith's pockets (wo hooks of blank .'necks, one on the Hirst National Bank and the other on the Plngreo National Bank. Smith first appeared at the Bis-mark Bis-mark rooming house FiHay evening and pahl the proprietor fifty cents for a room for the night. Yesterday afternoon af-ternoon ho returned and told Mrs. Grelner that he would take the room for two weeks and in paying Ihe rental rent-al in advance submitted ihe check for $2l.N5 on the Read company. Woman Became Suspicous. The stranger ha 1 not yet endorsed the check rnd the presence of Mrs. Grelner and her two children he wrote Ihe name Sun Smith across this back ot the hocus paper. The woman then paid Smith the $15.S5 in cash, lut derided lo take no chances and sent her son downstairs lo make Inquiries In-quiries regarding Ihe check-He check-He was advised to keep the strong-er strong-er in siht and take the check to the Read company at once. This the boy did and was informed that the chec't was a forgery. He then follow-ed follow-ed Smith up the street for three blocks and meeting Detective Ward-low, Ward-low, acquainted the officer with the circumstances. Smith was placed under a i rest at once and locked up In the city jail. Smith Identified, During the evening Mrs Grelner called at the station nnd Identified Smith as the man who had given her the cheek. She also identified the $10 bill which she had given the stranger as part payment of the cash alleged to be due him. When facing this almost unmistakable evidence of his guilt Smith told several different stories, stating at one lime that another an-other man had slven him the check with promise of a dollar if he would cash it. He could not give the police po-lice a description of this alleged second sec-ond party. Smith was asked to sl.rn a release for the $15 S5 in order that the police could turn the money over to Mrs. Greiner. but be refused to do so. knowing that his signature would be used as evidence against him. IL maintained that the forged check bad been endoised by the mysterious second sec-ond partv. Forger Stranger to Police. The man under arrest is believed to be an Assvrlan and I1 n stranger1 in the city. After a complete Investigation Inves-tigation or the case by the police the matter will be turned over to the dis- j tiict attorney. |
