Show JONES AS A WITNESS BEFORE CORONER Postal Clerk Who Killed Arthur F. Sheppard Will Take Stand Today Explain Deed. Salt Lake. July 20. Police officials claim that Mrs. Velmay Cowdln Jones robbed Arthur E. Sheppard after he had been shot down and killed by her husband, John A. Jones, In front of the Wellington hotel yesterday morning, morn-ing, removing $23 in cash from his pockets, in addition to a quantity of trinkets, while pretending to caress him and try to make him speak to her. "I suspected when we had searched the woman at police headquarters that she shad been through the pockets of Sheppard," said Sergeant J. J. Roberts yesterday. MrB. Jones had $25 and some trlnkots in her handbag. She first tried to claim that the money and other articles were her own. She had not been telling the truth, and 1 questioned her carefully. "Finally the woman admitted that sho had gone through the pockets of Sheppard while she kneeled beside him after he had been shot down by Jones. But she said sho thought It was all right because Sheppard was her husband. Shortly before this ad- mission the woman told iue she had told a falsehood In saying that she had ever been married to Sheppard. She said that Sheppard had bad $200 on bis person Junl before he was shot, but she was unable to find more than $25 of this amount" |
