Show 'WOMEN "COPS" IN SPOKANE , i SPOKANE, Wash, July 24 Three women are now full-fledged members of the police department of Spokane Thev are. Captain Bertha Smith of th ' Salvatlou Army, and Mrs Ella Jones and Mrs N. W. Alexander of tue Volunteers of America. They wear regulation stars and will don i;uiforiiis of dark blue when on duly. Thr-ir quarters are In the city jail, whore they are designated as matrons, and thev have full charge ot all women wo-men prisoners. The three women have divided the work into three shifts of elchl hours each, so that on- is on duty all tho time. Mayor Nelson S. Pratt and Commissioner Armstrong are highly pleased with the innovation, and John T. Sullivan, chief of the force, and the rank nnd file are of the opinion the new members mem-bers will be of Inestimable value to the dcpartmenL The women were appointed after (strict civil pervlco examinations, ex-aminations, and their pay has - been fixed at $S0 a month. Capt. Smith has had several vears experience in police work as an" officer of the Salvation Army and will probably have command com-mand of the squad. |
