Show THE SINKING OF THE FRENCH SUBMERSIBLE "PLUVIOSE" The dancer Incident to the operation opera-tion of submarines and submersible was empraslzed recently when the French submersible. "Pluviose," was sunk' in the Encash Channel by the steamer "Pas do Calais." Tho steamer was crossing the channel from-Calais to Dover when It struck something In the water which the officers of the ship thought was a log. A few minutes later the bow of the Injured submersible rose above the surface Kor 10 minutes the bow showed above the water. A boat was lowered, but blows on the metal bow drew no response re-sponse frm the 2r men caged within. Suddenly the bow disappeared, the ship's boat barely escaping the vortex, vor-tex, and tho only visible sign of the disaster was are oil floating on the surface. The August Popular Mechanics Mechan-ics eontans some .yery interesting pictures of the distaster, and carefully care-fully explains the difference between submersiblcs and submarines. It states: "In war, submarines would Operate near their own coast, and woul protect pro-tect harbors against an Invading fleet. Submersiblcs, as seagoing Vessels of tne torpedo-bont type, would accompany accom-pany fleets and attack the enemy's vessels." |
