' EXCAVATIONS FOR THE MEWSCH00L The excavations have been completed complet-ed and the concrete foundatlou work was started this morning on a new school building to ' be erected on. Twenty-second street between Van Purtn aJid Harrison avenues. The new school has not been named as yet, and for the present will be known a.' the Twenty-second etreet school. The building will be erected on the site which was obtained in a recent trade made by the school board, and H Is probably the finest school slto li the city. The lot has a 360 foot front and there are three and a half acres of ground In the plot. According Accord-ing to the plans the building will face Twenty-second street. A complete plan for tho new school calls for 32 rooms, but only 12 of the rooms will be built at this time, and the estimated cost of the original structure Is $30,000. The additional rcoms will be built as demanded by Iho Increase In population of the district. dis-trict. The new school Is .o situated that there will bo no need for another school lwHween the foothills on the cast and the river on the north. It will be seven block from the Madison Madi-son school and nine blocks from the Dte building. The contract for I he coucrete foundation foun-dation work has been awarded to the Arm of Lovedahl & Jackson Tor $4,-600, $4,-600, but the contract for the super-ftructure. super-ftructure. will not be awarded until early in the spring. It was not calculated calcu-lated to do more than place the foundation foun-dation this fall. This Is done for tho purpose of having everything In readiness read-iness to start on the building proper as soon as weather permits. By thus getting the earliest possible start on the superstructure the bull 1-ing 1-ing will be ready for the fall opening of the school term next September, The building will be three stories hi height with no basement, and the boiler and toilet rooms will be located locat-ed In a building which will bo only a wing of the main building. The structure struc-ture will be modern throughout and Is planned along the same lines as several sev-eral of the modern school buildings In Chicago and St. Louis. A feature of this new school is the fact that the building Itself will be shielded ag.iln.st the cold canyon winds and form a substantial windbreak for tho playgrounds. In the construction of this new school the board of education Is following fol-lowing out tho principle of larger and fr-wer buildings. Tho board has learned learn-ed by experience that this is the better plan for Iho reason that It Is ir.oro economical and far more satis-ltctory satis-ltctory results are obtained.
