Show No More Red Fire and Parades in State of New York Now York. Oct. 25. The passing of old-time campaign methods is apparently ap-parently marked by the present gubernatorial gub-ernatorial nnd congressional campaign cam-paign In New York. Keen political observers have several times noted that tho campaign is the quietest in many years and they declare that'll is not due to public apathy, but merely to the fact that the day of red lire, torchlight parades, banners bands and buttons, as well as street corner spell binding and cart-tail oratory has gone by. In all New York there are not more than half a dozen campaign banners ban-ners this year; no American Hags arc used for campaign advertising, and the man wearing a button with the name and picture of his favorite candidate candi-date on It la a rarity. "On the whole this system of campaigning Is the better one," declared de-clared John A. Mason, secretary of the Democratic slate committee. "Red fire nnd parades d..n't make totes. The quiet' campaign is more effective. effec-tive. With the passing of time-honored customs and methods, saner ways of dolug the work of the campaign are coming into vogue Newspaper and campaign literature Lave taken the place of the old devices. Appeals are now made to the voters' reason, not to their emotions. "The last time Hags, bunting, banners ban-ners and buttons were ii6od in largo amounts in thU city was t ho Mo Klnley-Rryan campaign of In th.'H year the American flag was used oxtcnshely. That was a national campaign, brt in every campaign since, there has been a constant tendency ten-dency to get away from the outward and vlssible sign of political activity. "During the Inst mayoralty campaign, cam-paign, one party alone spent $1,000 on campaign buttons. Not a cent Is being be-ing used by the New York committee's commit-tee's for this puriK.se this year. Similarly Simi-larly with lithographs ii r posters In the old days, almost every store window win-dow had a lithograph of a candidate on view. This vear one must walk blocks before finding one." |
