Show KEEP IT OUT OF THE SCHOOLS. The board of education of Salt Lake City is opposed to the collecting col-lecting of nickels and dimes in the public school for any purpose. For which position the heads of the schools are to be commended. Some one had proposed that the school children of Utah, contributing con-tributing liberally, should help obtain a silver service for the Battleship Bat-tleship Utah, but the Salt Lake board of education has vetoed the movement, and for so doing has our thanks and the thanks of the parents of the children of all Utah. No matter how worthy the object, we are opposed to this soliciting solicit-ing in the schools. There are little ones whose parents could afford to contribute, but there are others who would suffer extreme humil-iation humil-iation and odious comparison, and that is an abuse which never should be allowed to enter the institutions where our children are supposed to stand on an equality and enjoy a fair field in the struggle strug-gle for an education. Keep this commercialism out of the schools. If there is any display of liberality to be made, it can be made beyond the sacred precincts of the American school. |
