If the schooner schoon-er Esfuerzo, which was searched by the Mcaraguan gunboat Venus, was flying the United States flap: at the time she was overhauled, as I1.19 been reported, sho was carrying the Stara and Stripes without any authority, according ac-cording to official advices received here. The navy department has authentic Information that the Eefuerzo Is not an American schooner. She Is said to have a Nlcarwian register and Is entitled to fly the Mcaraguan Mca-raguan flag. It Is thought probable that she may be partly owned by Americans, but that In do sense entitled enti-tled her to the protection of the United States as an American vessel. Under these circumstances the American government would not be Justified In taking any action whatever In her case. The slate department has received a telegram from Consul Moffatt at Jlluertelils confirming the story of tho search of the schooner Esfuerzo by ihe Venus, and stating that the former for-mer vessel was American owned. He added that the Esfuerzo sailed under the Xlcaraguan flag, and It was assumed as-sumed by him that she had a Nicaragua!) Nicara-gua!) register; therefore ho stated the schooner was not entitled to the protection pro-tection of the United States. |
