Show NEILAND1 ANTARCTIC French Expedition Returns Re-turns With Record of Discoveries Punta Arenas, Feb. 12 The French Antarctic expedition appears to have bepn a success frcm a scientific point of viev,. Dr. Charcot, the commander, Is here, having arrived on the steamer Pourquer Past. New land was discovered discov-ered far south, the coast lines sur-voed, sur-voed, and early maps made complete. During the first Antarctic summer, 1908-09, the expedition, in spile of the difficulties which threatened to Imperil Im-peril Its success, was able to complete the map as far as Adelaide Island, oir the north entrance to the Strait of Magellan, and the westernmost of the group of Queen Adelaide island, and a stretch ot new land 120 miles Ions was suiveyed. Tho expedition ultimately ulti-mately reached Alexauder island. The region was explored and proved to be barren and covered with Icebergs, glaciers gla-ciers and masses of rock. It afforded no shelter to the explorers who wintered win-tered at Petermann Island. The session was comparatively mild, but bad enough to cause considerable slckneas in the party. Nuuierous Interesting excursions were made among tho glaciers. Darlng the anbrequenit lAntarctitj summer the expedition explored Deception De-ception ond Budgnian islands, in South Shetlaud archipelago. Following this, the explorers continued south, discovering discov-ering i.ew land to the west and south of Aluxandeiland, and Peter island wa also visited. The expedition navigated as far a: latitude 70 degrees south, longitude 120 west. Alexander island, or as It is some- J times ailed. Alexanderland, Is a small Island In the South Atlnulle ocean, about latitude C9 degrees south, longitude longi-tude l't degrees west, and Is considered consid-ered to be a part of the so-called Antarctic Ant-arctic continent.
