Show HORSE WENT INTO THE RIVER While driving along the canyon road last evening, ut a point near what is known as the "Wilcox Resort," a short distance, above the "Oaks." Gus Brlck-bon, Brlck-bon, Walter Buikman and John Lund had an experience that they aro not eagor to repeat. The horse they were driving was a young animal. Inclined to be "colt.sh." They had Just made th turn at tho point of the hill when R. W. Jewell, with his, automobile, made his appearance! ap-pearance! The horse became frightened fright-ened and, of course, started to run away on tho river side of the road. Tho result was thnt the animal made a leap over the bank and succeeded In Ian-ling In the middle 01 the: stream where the water was ten feet deep. Burkman and Lund made a leap for life, landing fairly on tho bank of tho stream, but Erlckson, who was driving driv-ing the animal, clung to tho lines In a bold attempt to stop the horse. Mr. hrlckson went tumbling into the river. Th water was so deep that both man and horse had to swlui to get to tho shore. The horso was somewhat handicapped han-dicapped In swimming by being' fastened fast-ened to tho buggy. The men on the bank threw Mr. Erlckson a rope, which he tied around the horse's neck. The animal was unhitched un-hitched from the buggy and towed fiFhoie, After about an hour's time the rescuers had only the bare horse to show for their croits. The harness har-ness and buggy were still In the stream and It Is said that both were practically destroyed Those In the automobile aided in rescuing Mr. Erlckscn and the horse, ana, it Is said, the young ladies of the automobile party did heroic work. |
