Show Lnjoie is a great player, ono of the greatest. DETROIT TEAM IS STRONGER I THAN IT WAS LAST SEASON (By E. VV. Dickerson.) j After seeing the four western teams of the American league In action, the 1 first four in the race last year, it looks to me like the Detroit Tigers will have an easier time winning the pennant this jear than they had last year or the year before. The Tigers look fully 20 per cent stronger than they did In ; 'OS. . ' Bus h, an American association re- cruit, who joined the team the latter part of last season, just too late to be eligible for the world's championship j series, strengthens shortstop greatly, j even over O'Leary, who was anything , but a weak member. O'Leary was out of the game a greater part of last sea- i son through injuries. Morlarlty is a splendid third base- man, a better than average batsman and a corking good base, runner. He is also aggressiveness personified' to. the point of dirty baseball. Coughlin was "all in" as a major leaguer last season. Moriarity Is an improvement over him in every respect, despite the former's greater experience. j Schaei'er Is a much more valuable man playing second base regularly than thJru or short, shifted around as he was last season. Hossman may not ; be the greatest first sacker In the ! American league, but his faculty of I making hits when they are needed make him one of the most valuable. Cobb, Crawford . and Mclntyro form an outfield which has no equal in either major league. Cobb looks even faster than over this year and does not seem to have lost any of the dash and pepper which has made him the baseball .sensation of the day. The backstopping staff Is the mediocre point of the team. Mullin looks better than he has at any' time since breaking into the big league, Willett and Summers are also showing splendid form with Donovan a great standby who may be depended on to j star as soon as the sun begins to shine. MoriarUv is liable to be put out of the game, by some of the many players play-ers who are "laying" for him for -his dirty work, but if he is O'Leary will be available for third position. Schae-fer Schae-fer makes a good captain and Jennings is a leader who inspires the spirit of victory In his men, such as few non-P non-P laying managers are able to do. Cravath's batting and fielding strength look at least equal to Fielder Jones', as in a playing way the team is not weakened by the loss of that great center fielder, 'whether Sullivan will prove the loader Jones was remains to be seen. With Smith showing the form he has in the last few games, he and Ed Walsh give the Sox a pitching I pair with few if any supeilors In the league. White Icoks good this year also, and a great young pitcher has been discovered dis-covered in Scott, who halls from Lander. Lan-der. Wyo., and is a brother of Lee Scott, deceased, a former member of the News staff of artists. His pitching In shutting out the St. Louis Browns last Sunday was one of the finest exhibitions exhi-bitions of box work I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. The St. Louis Browns look good for a place iu the first division, but there are weak polnt3 in the line-up, especially es-pecially in baiting, which take from It tho suggestion of pennant winning. Cleveland looks third best at present, with tho club's usual string of hard luck Incidents starting so early as It has this year. Cy Young strength- c-us the pitching staff fully 10 per cent. |
