Chicago, May 17. The Record-Herald will say tomorrow: A new freight schedule from all the territory east of the Missouri river to all the western states and cities not located on the Pacific coast will go into effect on the trans-continental lines July 1. The, new rates will be based upon the rates which tho interstate commerce com-merce commission ordered the railroads rail-roads to put in from St. Paul and Chicago Chi-cago to Spokane and will be an average aver-age reduction under the present rates of about fifteen per cent The railroads decided to do this Instead In-stead of fighting the order of the commission com-mission fn the courts. This decision resulted from a visit of J. C. Stubbs. traffic director of the Harrlman lines to the commission in Washington last week. Conferences are being held In Chicago at which the new tariffs are being prepared. ' One of the officials who Is attending said: "The rallorads have decided to try to carry out the principle announced by the commission In toe Spokane rate decision, instead of appealing to the courts to preent such a reduction of our revenue. The result will be a general reduction in all rates from the vast terlrtory east of the Missouri river to the territory west of the Missouri Mis-souri river save that along tho coast. It will also mean reductions in many of the rates from the west to all eastern east-ern points. It will bo voluntary reduction re-duction by tho railroads solely' in the hope of satisfying the public opinion as In the opinion of the commission our rates are too high." |
