Walter Royal, claiming to be a spec ial watchman for the Rio Grande Rail-' wny company, appeared at hc police station this morning in connection with an alleged coal stealing case nud landed In jail on tho strength of his own statements. A complaint was made to Officer Lever that an aged widow lady, who resides in the vicinity of the Rio Grande tracks, was detected Thursday Thurs-day In picking up a bucket of coal which was scattered along the tracks. Rival, It was, claimed, thereupon constituted con-stituted himself ofllcer, complaining witness, prosecuting attorney, Judge nnd Jury, and fined her the sum of J3 for theft The old lady was oer-awed oer-awed by his show of authority, and. fearing a term in the penitentiary, if not outright execution, handed him over the money: The self constituted officer gave her In return a receipt which road as follows: "Received from Mrs the sum of $3; fine for stealins coal. (Signed) "R- G. W. Co." Chief Browning was informed of the presence at the station of Royal, and immediately sent for him. The latter did not deny Issuing tho tecelpt and receiving the $3 mentioned, and said that he was only acting uuder tho Instructions In-structions of Mr. Mullen, his superior. He said that he had come from Salt Lake only Thursday and that this was his first detective work. Ho was asked ask-ed how much coal had been "stolon," and stated the value to be about ten cents. The chief was rather taken aback with the authority apparently vebted in the youn man. but recovered himself him-self sufficiently to order him thrown into Jail to await an investigation. Royal was searched and a huge automatic auto-matic revolver, a special railway police po-lice star and considerable money were taken from him. The charge ot obtaining money under false pretences preten-ces was entered against him. |
