Show BIG AUTOMOBILE ENGINE STALLED FOR SIX HOURS Escondldo. Cal., April 5. After being be-ing stalled for six hours in a soft piece of road a mile .below this city Friday afternoon, the big automobile engine and three trailers of the California Cali-fornia Trona company, which Is making mak-ing the Journey under Its own power from San Ditgo to Death Valley, via Los Angele3, left Ercondldo yosterday morning over the regular automobile Inland route by way of Elslnore. The overland train left San Diego Thursday afternoon. Within a mile of Escondldo. the wheels of one of the cars sank through the crust of the roadbed and were bulled to the hubs. Six hours of strenuous work were required to extricate the equipment. equip-ment. The combined power of the cars is 150-horsepower. A shaft runs from the engine to the first yar back to and underneath each of the trailers. A clutch connects each section of the shaft. When the engine Is running, it propels only the head car but by means of this clutch-connected shaft, gives Impetus to each trailer. A roller rol-ler chain connects a cog wheel on tbe shaft of each car. A novel effect la produced when tho wheel Is In motion. mo-tion. The wheels are of steel, equipped equip-ped with teeth to bite into the sand. The train Is to be used for hauling soda from the mine In the desert near Johannesburg to the nearest railway. 26 miles away. It was brought across the Atlantic, thence over the Isthmus by the Tehuantepec railroad and from Sallna Cruz to San Diego by a Hamburg-American 'liner. |
