Le-gardo Le-gardo and Ocampo, the resident Philippine Phil-ippine commissionera, today received a cablegram from the president of the Filipino chamber of commexxe, which they retarded as a complete rebuttal of the statements lasted from tho insular' in-sular' bureau, .to, the effect that the business Interests i the islands' are favorable to the Payne tariff bill. The text of the cablegram is as follows: fol-lows: "Manila, April 5. Legardo and Ocampo.. House of Representatives, Washington. "The Filipino ohamber of commerce, at a public meeting attended by merchants mer-chants and manufacturers, adopted a resolution urging the following amendments, amend-ments, to the Payne bill: "Free entry Into all ports of tho Philippines of agricultural machinery, raw products, not produced in the Islands, Is-lands, and all material necessary for tho construction and repairing of vessels. ves-sels. "Free entry into all ports of the United States of Philippine sugar and tobacco in conformity with letters let-ters 'A, B and C of Joint resolution No. 11. of the Philippine legislature, passed March 18, 1908. "And with, a view of protecting importations im-portations already on hand, we require that the bill, with amendments suggested sug-gested above, should not be in force until six months after Its passage. The letters referred to in the cablegram cable-gram relate to clauses limiting the yearly Importations into the United States from the Philippines under tho free list to 400.000 tons of sugar, 7,-000,000 7,-000,000 pounds of raw tobacco and 160,000.000 cigars. |
