Show HARRIMAN MAY SOON' BUILD NEW RAILWAY It I Believed That He Will Construct Road to Compete With Western Pacific. Salt Lake. March 12. A receut is-nie is-nie of the New York Commercial publishes pub-lishes the followiug story, which is glveu a great deal of credence In Salt Lake City: v It is believed that Harriman Interests Inter-ests are seeking to get control or the last practical route througn the Sier-las Sier-las one that was surveyed for tho mam line of the .Western Pacitlc and abandoned for the one that has been followed In building the new roaa. This conclusion Is prompted by tnc fact that thirty surveyors known to be lu the service of the Southern Pacific Pa-cific are running grades through WaShoe county. Nov., and Lassen and Human counties, California, over nearly near-ly the same route that was abanoon-ed abanoon-ed by the Western Pacltlc. This route Is through ' Fredonyer pass, which was conceded by engineers to be entirely practicable, but not as desirable as the Beckwltli, which has been used. In connection with the surveys through Fredonyer puss, it' has been suggested that a new main line might be sought lp that direction. The distance dis-tance is not much greater than that traversed bythc present route, whereas where-as the grade would be much less. Tho activities of the surveyors have also been explained by the suggestion' sugges-tion' that tho Oregon Short Line might be seeking a connection from a point on Its present main line in Idaho to some point on the Shasta rotfte ot the Southern Pacific. |
