Show NO DISCRIMINATION. Senator Geo. Nixon of Nevada takes a broad . and sensible viow of the tariff question. Ho is opposed op-posed to a tariff discriminating against the West. In an interview, he says: "I want all the products of tho West protected. Hides, in my opinion, are Just as worthy of protection as shoes and leather. I know the manufacturer calls hides his Taw material. I also know that the cattle raisers of tho West believe hides are their finished product. They believe in the protective protect-ive principle, but it will not do to give the manufacturers of the East protection protec-tion and tho farmer of tho West free trade. The Republican party will not commit the folly of indorsing a policy as suicidal as that would be." The tariff. If made sectional, would rob protection of the strongest argument argu-ment In Its favor. The protective tariff tar-iff is supposed to be so equitably applied ap-plied as to benefit all sections of the country, Inflicting a burden on no particular par-ticular Industry, but to protect the East and fall to protect tho West would leave western Republicans without with-out a single lino of defense in" support of the corner stone of the structure on wnlch their Republicanism is built. Our hides and wool and lead must receive the same kindly consideration that is extended to the raw and manufactured manu-factured products of the East. |
