Show I SUTHERLAND FOR SUPREME BENCH, l'tali Is to be rocognlzcd as have few western states Witii ibe retirement retire-ment of Associate Justice Joha H. Clarke, George Sutherland i.s to be appointed to the United States supreme, su-preme, conn This is an honor to be conferred on our former senator, a forecast of which was made by The Standard-Examiner soon after the election of President Harding George Sutherland was born in England, but came io Utah as a small boy. He was reared in Provo and obtained his early education in that city. He began the practice of law in his home town, but soon moved in Salt Lake where he was associated with Parley L. Williams and Walde-mar Walde-mar Van Cott Later ho formed the law firm of Sutherland, Van Cott & I Allison. In 1900, Sutherland was elected to congress, and in 1905 was made United Unit-ed States senator, serving two terms. He was defeated by William H King in 1916. During the campaign of 1920 he was one of two or three men who were in constant conference with I Warren G. Harding and helped lo de I 1 ermine policies on which the election waa foughL When President Harding was elected elect-ed it was freely predicted the Utah man would be offered a place in bis administration. In fact he refused the appointment of United States attorney attor-ney general which was later given to Mr. Daugherty of Ohm. With Senator Smoot having been one of five men who directed the affairs af-fairs at the Republican national convention con-vention so as to make Mr Harding the nominee of his part. and with Senator Sutherland virtually the controlling con-trolling factor in shaping policies of the campaign that followed, it early became evident Utah would have a powerful voice in the present administration admin-istration and high position would bo offered to Utah men. George Sutherland's elevation is evidence of President Harding's gratitude, grat-itude, but it is more than lhat. By many Senator Sutherland is regarded aa the most profound authority in the United States on international law and a lawyer pre eminenilv pquipped to serve on the supreme bench of the Unlted Sfetes. |
