Show COUNTY SALARIES WILL BE LOWERED I SALT LAKE. Oct. 13. Figures assembled as-sembled In the office of Mark Tuttle. 'state auditor, Indicate reductions In j county expenditures to some extent as the result of reduction In the assessed 'valuations of several counties. The saving will result from the automatic reduction of tho counties to lower classes, In which the salaries of the county officers are lower than those I now paid. The law requires that, three monthn before a general election, the countv commissioners shall by ordinance fix the salaries to be paid to county offl-I' offl-I' erg for tho ensuing term. Inasmuch ias thai term has been lengthened by action of the last legislature from two :to four years, the salaries fixed by the 'counties becomes a matter of some 'importance. Mr. Tuttle. therefore, asked each county clerk to furnish him a 1 1st of the salaries of county officers as determined by the commis-jsloners commis-jsloners for the next four years. Tho list reveals that In some Instances In-stances the county commissioners ap-,'pear ap-,'pear to have gono on the assumption I that their counties remain In the same classes as formerly. On the other hand, the reduced valua one have placed the counties In certain cases In lower classes, with resulting lower .maximum salaries for county officials j permitted by law. Weber and Utah counties, with valuations val-uations In each case In excess of $f0.-j $f0.-j 000,000, pay salaries somewhat lower I than Salt Lake, though possibly more I per $1 of assessed valuation than is 'paid in Salt Lake county, which has In valuation In excess of $250,000.00(1 'Carbon county, with $27,000,000, has a hlpher salary list on the whole th in ; Cache, with $32,000,000. while Cache its in turn paying on the whole bet-ter bet-ter salaries than Box Elder, which bas nearly $39,000,000 valuation.
