But we nre Interested in what happens there because it will affect the British empire, one of ilie world's I great powers. India is one-third as big as the I'nited States, but has almost three times as many people These people are of many different races and many-different many-different religions and do not agree. Because of this disagreement the people of India have not br en able to rule themselves Since 1757 165 years ago. Great Britain has ruled In dia. A native of India called Mohandas Knraxnchand Gandhi iMoehahnds Ka rahm-chand Gbandee). believes India In-dia should be tree, and since the world war ended r.handi has become a very powerful man Today he is tin-leader tin-leader of all the nationalists, or na tives of India who believe they should be free. Now the British have arrerstrsi Chrindi and hi followers are angry The British lear they will start a revo lulion to put the British out of India BRITISH GOVERNMENT TROUBLES. Trouble in India is making trouble for the British government at home in l England. David Lloyd George has been prune minister or chief executive of the Brl' ish government since 1916. He Is head j of the British cabinet I Now one member of the cabinet has quit He Is Edwin S. Montagu e ! retary for India I .Montagu resigned because of a disagreement dis-agreement in policv with British officials offi-cials in India This has weakened i Lloyd George's cabinet ! Lloyd George beeam.' a prime min I later in 1M16 because several politicaj parties banded together and forme I what Is railed a coalition to support him. Now some of ihe political parties that joined the coalition are threatening threaten-ing to leave it If they did, it would mean that Lloyd George would have to resign and a new cabinet or government would take the place or the one he lormed. THE SOLDIERS' BONUS. When the United States was In the world war thousands of soldiers, sal-lorn sal-lorn and marines served their country and received $30 a month as pay while other men ni home made much more money. Many people believe that the government gov-ernment should make this up by giving giv-ing soldiers s grant of land or money Such a grant would be called adjusted compensation or bonus. President Harding wan;.- to pay the bonus and raise the money by means of a sales tax Congress is opposed to a sales tax. A sales tax is I lax charged when ever one persons sell something to someone else- whenever a thing Is I "turned over." as merchants say. Thus, when the manufacturer sella j bis product to the wholesaler, a smnll tax would be paid: when the wholesaler whole-saler passed It on. another tax would ! be paid and so on until it reached ihe consumer Of course the tax would nut be lev led on every turnover but only on certain ones, the law would specify. Congress now Is planning to pass: the bonus bill and give soldiers, ai lors and marines land at once if they i want It. But if tho soldiers want money, uu-dei uu-dei this plan, they v.ould be given certificates cer-tificates for the amount due them which would be paid later, when the government has the money. |
