GUEST. 4 Tni: GALLERY GODS The critic in his easy seat Found little In tho play to charm; H The jeweled lady on the street Who leaned upon her wscort'e arm Said this, while watting for her car: H "How tedious such dramas are" H But down four flights of stairs ther H c I A throng of youth with eyes aflame. H In all that they had seen that night The gallerj gods had found' delight H Time was. with them I stood In wall H To reach those topmost wooden H Had sit from seven o'clock till eight H Now the most tedious of feats) H And laughed and joked the time aWSO H L'ntll the orchestra should play; H And when at last the curtain rose We sa' en1 r. meed from start to clo' A happy, jouthful throng back then H tJllmpslng the stage's famous men. H We loved the drama, and we paid. H Our hard-earned quarters to bchoM H Its purple and Its red brocade. And live the stories that It told; I Wo did not sit in easy chcairs, H lint madly raced four flights of stair H To struggle for a seat from which H j We could look down upon the rich e gloried In triumphant truth. H Beholding It through the eyes of youth. H , But I am older now and ait No longer thrilled by all I aee, I find b-ss sparkle in the wit . The play's not what it used to be. H 'Today I view through eyes of Age ri The passing Klorles of the stage, And h'iv',ng reached the aisles of ease I am more difficult to please. 'Ago, surfeited with pleasure, nods I M ; toys which thrill the gallery gods. ' |
