Now. this Isn't a baseball story, though you might think so from the name of it. But It Is hardly time for imseball except maybe down South where It is quite warm. And. anyway, this wouldn't be n baseball story, even if it was summer. No. this is a story about a long, fast run that Jackie Bow Wow. the llttlo pupp dog took one day nnd But, there! Let me begin at the be-Klnning. be-Klnning. ins day when Uncle Wiggiiy was hopplnp past lh' kennel li"u whoro Tackle nnd eetle iiow Wdw, the two pupp dog boys, lived ihe bunny gentleman gen-tleman saw Mrs. Bow Wow, the dog lady out In the front yard. "lion do you do. Mrs Bow Wow?" asked th' rabbit une'.e. "I'i.i I'oplinc rfr- fl np Indficrt " WAS I the unswer. "And how are ou. Cncle Wltelt " ih. much better." answered thu rabldt Kentlemun "My rheumatism hardly hurts at all today. If Jacklo or Peetle happened to be around I'd run a little race with thorm" "Jackie ha cone to the store.'" said Mrs Bow Wow And to tell you tho truth. I am beginning to get worried about him ' Why ?" Uncle Wlgglly wanted to know. " Because be has been gone so long. ' answered Mrs. Bow Wow. "And Per-clval. Per-clval. our police dog. you know, was telling mo he had seen the Puzzy Pox and the WoOBle Wolf In the woods on-);. on-);. yesterday, I'm afraid something 3nay have happened to Jaekle." "Oh, don't say that!" exclaimed I.'n- cle WlgSJTlly ' N'ow don't worry any more, my dear lira Itow Wow I'll hop along and see If i can't find your little puppy boy. I'll brlnp him safely home!" Mrs. Bow Wow said that was very kind, and off hopped the bunny. Along through tho woods he went, looking this way and that for Jackie, but he couldn't een hear tho little puppy: doe- linn li liss see blm. I'rirlo Wir- I Kily asked of the birds, but they had not seen Jackie. Finally. Jusl when Mr. Longears was hintself getting worried he heard a, noise in tho bushes and then a bark, and next ho saw Jackie coming along as fust aj he could run. "Jackie! Jackie! What's the matter?" mat-ter?" Called the bunny. "Run along, Uncle Wifglly; Run along"' barked Jackie "Something terriblo Is chasing me! Don't stand there or it may get you. Run along now and you'll have a head start' Run! Ion't wait for mo to catch up. to you! Run! So Uncle Wiggiiy kicked up his hind legs and ran along the path Just ahead of Jackie. The bunny could bear the doggie boy coming along be-( hind him, and back of Jackie was a banging. tnpplnR noise ns fcf some w, istratiRO animal was leaping along ns! fast ns he could leap. "(h. that must be the Skeezicks or) the Pipslsewah after Jackie:" thought-Cnclo thought-Cnclo WJggHv. "It's a good thing It started to run in time, or ho might have caught me also!" Efcster and faster hopped thi- h inn , jut ninnaginc to keep ahead "f Jackie. Jack-ie. And along came tno doRgle boy, barking and howling. And behind tho doggie boy came something Uncltt Wlgglly dldn t dare stop long enough to turn around and eoo what f. was. But It was something bounding and u nplpg and leaping along. "I guess It's some bad animal trving to get Jackie to nibble his earn thought the bunny, "And if It catches Jackie u will wanL me next ih, this Is dreadful'" Faster and faster ran Uncle Wiggllv. Faster and faster ran Jackie. Tho little lit-tle puppy dog boy was beglrmlng fo get tire.! for he had run a Ions; instance. ins-tance. But still that terrible "some thing" was chasing him At last the bunny came to a plaeo where om- path branched off from an-othei an-othei like the wide part of the letter V Tho left road led to the deep, . dark woods, and tho right to Undo Wiggiiy "s bungalow. "Follow me. Jaekle! Take the right road' ' rled Mr. Longears. But, by mistake, the puppy chap turned to the left. And as he soon passed Uncle Wlgglly tho bunny had a chance to look behind Jackie and seo what was chasing the little dog. And what Uncle Wiggiiy saw made him call out ""Stop running. Jackie' Stop running' run-ning' You have nothing r( r.-ar! There isn't any animal after you! Stop your long, fast run I" ' But there Is something after mo.' howled Jackie '! can hoar It right behind mo and sometimes It seems to grab hold of me " "It's only an old tin ran, caught on a piece, of wild grapevine, and tht-' grapevine is caught on your tall!" aald Uncle Wlgglly "Don't run awnvfrom ' it nny more, Jackie. It can't hurt, you ! " Jackie stopped, and then, of course. tho tin can no longer chased him. For' It was only a tin can caught on his. tail that had frightened the puppy on! his way home from the store. Tt faster he ran the faster tho bad "something" seemed to come after him. And only that I'nclo Wlggll ' saw what It was, Jackie might havi, been tunning yet. And the bunny himself had been frightened for .i i time. "But after this I'm always going t' look behind me before I run away,"' barked Jackie, as he took off the tin can. "Next time it may be only a paper box!" "That's right!" laughed tho bunny gentleman. And If the pussy's tail tall doesn't freozo fast to the milk bottle when s-he wraps it around t keep the cream warm, I'll tell you next about Uncle Wlgglly and the danger sign. |
