With tho rail strlko situation throughout the coun-! coun-! try rapidly growing more serious, representatives rep-resentatives of the carriers and the shop i rafts tonight were deadlocked I from moving toward a settlement of Mho strike on an Issue wholly foreign to the original Issues that brought on the strike to wit: That a restoration of seniority rights to tho strikers, should tbey return to work, bo granted O.M. MUST VI1J I Thr original major differences be-twi be-twi en the rurrli rs and (he shop crafts have virtually been smoothed over and the ground work laid for a settlement, i but the seniority question now threat-I threat-I ens to delay the settlement of tho Htrlke until either the carriers or tho jshop crafts relinquish their firm I stands I The Carriers declare that under no conditions will thoy restore thr seniority seni-ority rights to the strikers while tho shop cratts ussert thut under no conditions con-ditions will thoy return to work unless their sonority rights are recognized. Outlining this stand of tho striking shop crafts, was a statement issued tonight by B. If. Jewell, head of the strikers, In which ho declared that If the railroads persist In their refusal to restore tho sonority rights, the strikers strik-ers will continue their fight "until tho last ditch ' BI; FOUR CONCERNED The question of tho restoration of sonority rights to tho strikers, moro than the original differences between tho carrlors and tho shop crafts, threatens to draw Into the nutlon-wide strike, the big four brotherhoods, according ac-cording to union officials. Those powerful pow-erful brotherhoods, which so far have kept aloof are vitally concerned over the precedent which would be established, estab-lished, that in the evont of a strike, tho railroad men leso their seniority right.
