May 3 Another first hand source of Information concerning con-cerning the early youth of Abraham Lincoln Is gone. Funeral services will be held today tor Mrs faille Saunders who ls dead here at the age of 92 years. Mrs Saunders, known throughout the community ls "Aunt Sallle" Saunders, Saun-ders, was ft sister of Ann Rutledge, the youthful sweetheart of Uncoln. sTl IHEH WITH SIfiOTZR. While Mrs. Saunrier was hut a child at the time, she remembered clearly the frequent visits of "Abe" Lincoln at her home. Sho was seven years i.ld when her older sister died at the age of 16, but the friendship of Lincoln for the family continued long ufter that and Mrs. Saunders had a fund of stories concerning him. Sho has also collected B numbeV of Lincoln mementoes one of tho most cherished cherish-ed of which was a patchwork quilt which she said was made wholly from Lincoln's old clothes. Another was an old English gram mar which her sister and Lincoln studied together in their childhood. Also In her collection Is an old daguerreotype, said to be tho best likeness of Lincoln In his early manhood man-hood in existence This daguerreotype was presented by Li need n to Robert Rutledge, a brother of Ann and Mrs Saunders. .Mi.:. Saunders came to Impo-e about 35 years ago with her husband who has been dead several years She passed the remainder of her life here. Two sons. Dr. H. G. Saunders of Santa Badbara, and James Saunders of Sls-quoc, Sls-quoc, this county, survive her. nn |
