Show j EDiTQlIt 'protect the homes of ogben. Most shocking is the news from Salt Lake that Charles A. Faus, a ' member of the board of education. J was shot down in his home Friday (evening by one of two masked rob-ibers rob-ibers who enterecr while the family was seated at the evening meal. The shooting was cowardly m the extreme and unprovoked. Mr Foils was unarmed and wholly at the command ol the bandits. One outrage after another has : occurred in Salt Lake. Robbery, assault and murder have filled the papers with sensations and caused i nervous apprehension. Eefore this condition arises in Ogden there should be a clean up. There should be less conversation as to what we are going to do and more action The police hearing before the civil service commission has proved that gambling is widespread. wide-spread. There are places where liquor can be obtained. Holes in the wall are being operated. This is nothing more than the creation of a rendezvous for the roughneck, rough-neck, the holdup and the thug. There arc festering sores in Og-don Og-don which will annoy us, unless there be aggressive, determined work on the part of the officers of the law. It should be unnecessary to keep officers in leoh until the word is given to i:o. Every officer should be up on his toes and going-from going-from the time he arrives on his beat until he is home again There is need for an arousing of tho.se intrusted with the keeping of Ogden a safe and decent place in which to live. Nothing lackadaisical lacka-daisical should be accepted. The time to move is now. There should be no uncertain response to the public demand for a purging of the community and the first evidence evi-dence of that response should be the wiping out of the gambling resorts. There are 30 or 40 officers in the police and sheriff's departments depart-ments men enough to turn the town upside down if necessary. They should be instructed to pro ceed with the clean up and within 24 hours not a saloon or a gam-bling gam-bling house should be in operation in the city As to evidence, every man about town can supply information if the officers cf the law plead inability ina-bility to discover the offenders. What Ogden demands today is net so much convictions as the driving out of the disreputable element, which constitutes fhe thug in the making and the murderer mur-derer on his way to the houses of our good citizens Wake up ! |
