Show FIGHT PROPOSAL TO HALT RECLAMATION WASHINGTON, Jan. 24. That tho enactment by congress of a general bill .suspending all payments by set-tlors set-tlors on government reclamation projects proj-ects during 1022. as Is being urged by several representatives of these settlers, set-tlers, would seriously cripple recla-matlon recla-matlon work during the coming year. Is the opinion of Congressman Addison P. Smith of Idaho. Some other members mem-bers and senators from the west nlso hold the view of Mr. Smith, and before be-fore any action Is taken by conttress, the two sides will be carefully weight-There are some casee, as has already-been already-been shown to congress, where some settlers on some projects are absolutely absolute-ly unable to meet the charges that are to fall due during 1922. But there has I i sn no showing that all settlers arc unable to meet these payments; In fact, there has been no showing to congress thus far that would Justify a law suspending all construction maintenance and operating charges for the current year. And it Is quite certain that congress, especially mom- hers from the nonlrrlKution states, wllli not vote to suspend all payments un-1 l BS a stronger case Is made out than has thus far been presented. Furthermore Furth-ermore bv no means all the senators and members from the Irrigation slates would vote for a general suspension. |
