Show EDITORIAL LIGHT COMPANY SEES NEW LIGHT. At last the Utah Power & Light company recognizes there has been a great upset in business and industry, and, as a result, an cmer-1 gency exists which calls for some-1 1 thing more than an arbitrary ex-1 I acting of schedules as worked out ! on a cold blooded basis of grant-ing grant-ing to Shylock his pound of flesh , On ye3terday, when the plea of the : fanners was before the Utah pub-lie pub-lie utilities commission, John F MacLane, chief counsel of the 1 power company, said his company desired to do whatever it should do as a good citLzen of the state of !Utah and, if the public utilities commission finds that, in its judgment, judg-ment, an emergency exists among .the farmers using electric energy to pump water for irrigation, the ! company was not opposed to granting relief. In other words, there has been a storm on the waters and the boat winch has been carrying the farmers, power users in the cities, general consumers and the Utah Power & Light company, has sprung a leak. The suggestion had been made that the power users us-ers in the cities and the farmers be thrown overboard so that at least the Utah Power & Light could be assured a safe journey, although all might be saved by helping to bail the water. At the crisis generous John MacLane, .with a quaver in his voice, ex-claims ex-claims : "Boys, I beg you, not to throw the farmers overboard. They are good fellows. We have not the heart to dump them as you would a sack of cats. Let them stay ! ' ' Rather considerate! But why class the general consumers, including in-cluding the small power users, with the sack of cats? Why not try to save them? The farmers should be aided They need the assistance they are demanding. So do all the con sumers of electric power, because they are passing through a storm penod and an emergency has aiisen. What a most peculiar situation we have, with the power monopoly monop-oly casting a doubt on the wisdom of the policy winch the commission commis-sion has pursued, and now asking that the commission be less rigid in its demands by recognizing the distressful times and applying a rule of equity and widespread justice. |
