Show PLANS MADE TO LIMIT HUNTERS Department of Agriculture Advocates Change in Present System Recently the bureau of biological j survey sent out a news release stating i that due to the rapid increase of hunt-j hunt-j eers who in many cases may far outnumber out-number the animals hunted within a given section, the department nf agriculture agri-culture advocates a limited license plan for big game, based on annual estimates es-timates of game conditions in each dis trict. This means that the number of big game licenses issued for a given area in one season would depend upon I the number of game animals which it had been determined in advance could be spnred. Some who have read I his article have misinterpreted It, thinking that , it was meant to apply to all species of game. This Is not the case, as It 1 would be impractical to follow thl.-plan thl.-plan where small game Is concerned. It would only be feasible in the case of big pamo where it is possible to estimate fairly accurately the number of animals in a given range In an article recently printed in i the American Game Protective Asso i.i i ion bulletin, this plan was advocated advocat-ed by Aldo Leopold and the association associa-tion believes that it will ultimately be necessary to adopt BUCb a plan in connection con-nection with all hip; game animals. This plan is already in use For instance, the Wyoming law permits the game commission to issue up to one hundred permits for the killing of male mooso and antelope This year the State game and fish commission issued permits for the killing of a limited nuinbt r of moose, but decided against the killing of any antelope until un-til these animals Increased to a point where U was certain no permanent damage would result. |
