Show II RAILROADS CALL FOR HELP I Failing to keep the roads free from congestion, private owner- i ship has appealed to the government to once- more relieve the sit-J sit-J uation. I When avc went to war in 1017, every Atlantic terminal was congested and the railroads were in an almost helpless condition. I Within two weeks, under government supervision, the freight, jam was broken and America was able to procped with the forwarding I of supplies to the allies, i The untangling of the railroads seems to be a slow process and it may be the government from now on will be called on to exercise greater supervisory powers and eventually control the trunk lines of the country. Rail transportation is so essential to the progress of the nation as to come within the scope of governmental function to the extent of being supervised. It begins to look as though for years the paternal hand of government must be placed on the railroads, if they are to escape financial difficulties and avoid a break down in operations. |
