Mrs Lawrence suffered i.iiprlsonment with Mi Pankhurt In Hollowell .fall In that yvar. 1912. when both were sentenced on .May 22 to nine months' Imprisonment for conspiracy and Inciting to malicious damage dam-age to property. It was the first conviction of these suffragette women on a criminal ' charge. They were released a month later, the reason riven bieng that their constitutions constitu-tions had broken down cn account of the hunger strike which they began in prison. Mrs. Lawrence, it was said at the time of her release, was in a dangerous state of health Mr and Mrs. Lawrence were formerly associated as-sociated with Mrs Pankhurst and her daughter Chrlsiabel in running the Women's Social and Political Union. The faction disagreed, dis-agreed, and both ihe Lawrences and the Pankhtirsts conducted separate campaigns. Mrs Lawrence will make a tour of the principal cities of the United Stales in the Interest of woman suffrage. Her object is educative, "l have not come to tho United States tcf dlSCUSS politics either of jour country or any other." Mrs. Lawrence said; "the average aver-age woman Is not yet alive to political questions ques-tions which concern her personally. "But American women, every woman, in fact, has grown to feel that vital change has come over the world since the beginning of 'hi war and that she herself 1 responsible for woman's future "The solidarity of men Is a small thing compared to the sisterhood of women. Underneath Un-derneath all nations -nd back of all nations lies the Inter-nation of mother. And as this solidarity becomes ConsciQUa among women a new force in the world ;r peace and brotherhood is generated "Women have one oca.lon. and one MRS PE.THICK LAWRLWCE SHOWN achievement ihe creation, preservation and protection of the numan race It is this vocation that unites iTOmeri all over tho world In a unity that goes far beneath any cleavage of nationality. In this solidarity of motherhood is rooted the solidarity of the human race." During her tour Mrs. Lawrence expects to continue the work of organizing women's clubs throughout the country into a "woman's movement for constructive peace." She began such labors during her visit to this country In the winter cf 1014. Mrs. Lowrence will be accompanied on her tour of this country by P"rau Yella Heftska, a famous Austrian suffragette. |
