Show I FORMER SENATOR'S DEFEAT lu the Texas primary election for governor, Joseph W Bailey has been defeated by Pal M Xeff. The margin betweeu the two men is a large one some 73,000. There was a time when Bailey was the idol of the southern democracy. lie uas a brilliant orator, a genial fellow, with an attractive at-tractive personality, and he seemed to be devoted to a high principle prin-ciple Then it was discovered that he was one of the leading counsel for Standard Oil, although serving as United States senator. He dropped out of public life for a time, but of late has been attempting attempt-ing to get back into favor, but during the war he made the fatal mistake of throwing the weight of his influence against all measures intended to strengthen the arm of the government. So today, in his home state, where he had an almost unanimous endorsement twenty years ago, he stands as a discredited man. It is well to give publicity to the fate of men of the character of Joseph W. Bailey, so that younger men may come to understand the price they must pay for duplicity and disloyalty. |
