Show GREAT BAND CONTEST CON-TEST TO BE HELD AT FAIR OCT. 17 Bands that have not yet entered the great band contest which will take place on the State Fair Grounds, October 1, 2, 8, and 4, the first four days of the State Fair, should wake applications in writing to State Fair Board, State Capital, at the earliest possible moment, it is announced. The contest is open to all amateur and semi-professional bands. Big prists are being offered contestants, and are of such high value seldom offered in a contest of this kind. Cornet, and saxophone solo contests con-tests will also be held, which will be open to all contestants and no entry fee required. Prisses to be awarded winners of the band contest are as follows, semi-professional semi-professional class, first $250 cash and $100 gold loving cup, donated by the ( Boyd Park, Inc., Salt Lake; second, (100 ca-sh and a valuable musical instrument in-strument to be decided on, donated by Western Music & Art Co., Salt Lake; third, $50 cash and a handsome ( baton, donated by Utah State Fair ; Association and in the amateur class 1 first $100 cash and a $75 gold loving cup, donated by Boyd Park, Inc., Salt ! Lake, second, $75 cash and a $115 Holton Trombone, donated by Glen j Bros.-Roberts Music Co., Salt Lake; third, $50 cash and a bass drum, do- nated by Betsley Music Op., Suit Lake. The prize to the winner of the cornet sole contest, is a gold cornet, donated by Consolidated Music Co., Salt Lake. The saxophone solo contest winner will be given a gold trimmed saxophone donated by Daynes-Bee-be Music Co., Salt Lake. ! The contest number for the semi- i professional players shall be "Poet j and Peasant," by Suppe, and one J other piece to be selected by the bands ! The amateur band will play "Songs i of the Old Folks," by Lake, and one j other piece selected by them. A fee i of $10 for each band must accompany the application, and this will be re- f funded upon the band's appearance at , the Fair Grounds. For the purpose of this contest, the terms "semi-professional' 'and "amateur' "ama-teur' "have been defined. A semi-pro- fessional band, for this contest, must 1 contain no more than the following number of professional musicians: a band of 25, not to exceed 8 professional profess-ional players; a band of 30, not to ex- ceed 9 professional players; a band of 40 not to exceed 10 professional play-ers; play-ers; leader excepted. A professional musician is defined, for this contest, as any musician who holds, or who has ever held, a card of membership in the American Federation of Musicians; Mus-icians; any person who is teaching or i who has ever taught intstifumental music for money compensation; any jj. person who has played a musical In- I strument for money on ten or more r occasions during any year for any j three years. h Amateur bands may have a pro- I - fessional leader, but shall not vn- 3 ' tain any other professional music- ian as defined above.
