Show oo- John L. Herrick in Review of Great Historical Events1 Elder John L. Herrick, former president presi-dent of the Western States mission of the It. D. S church, was the pnnci pal speaker at the Second ward last ' evening. He delivered an excellent address on the subject of "Great His torical Events" flishop George Rrowning presided and conducted the service which was the regular Sunday Sun-day evening meeting. A large and in terested corigregation was present. A feature of the service was singing by the congregation of "Come, Come Ye Saints," "Redeemer of Israel" and "America " A vocal solo was ren dered by Miss Vera Jones. Walter 3. Scovllle or the Ogden stake his council, coun-cil, offered the invocation and benediction bene-diction was pronounced by President Alva A. Scoville of the Weber stake. Elder Herrick expressed his great pleasure at once again being able to associate with his old friends in the Second ward, where he was for manv years a resident and active worker Her congratulated the members on th- great improvements made In the meetinghouse, meet-inghouse, stating that it was the first time he had been Inside the chapei since the recent renovations. The speaker said he was firm in his convictions that this was the greatest age in the world's historv anJ that this is a critical time m the af fairs of the world. In developing his theme, the speaker called attention to the belief of the Latter-day Saints in the doctrine of pie-existence, and sai l that if we believe that the spirit ez isted before it tabernacled in the flesh we must also beliee that somp great plan was outlined for the coming ot people on this earth. He said God had made known thai it was His work ; and His glory to bring to pass the salvation and exaltation of man and then told that revelation had be?n I given to the church in which the two 1 ans for the redemption of man aa ! been made known A Son of the Morning, he said, had presented a plan in which he proposed to compel all ' men to be saved, whether they would or no. and for this work, he wanted all ihe glory belonging to the Father. Another Son of God came forth ana presented His plan which was to teach men the jlan of salvation and crant I unto them their free agency in the, matter of acceptanee or rejection ami all ihe glory He would give unto the Father. The plan of the second was accepted and since that time there had been continual strife jlvvccn the two. Satan Ever Tempting Satan, he said, who was the first to present the plan of compulsion ani whose plan was rejected was ever endeavoring en-deavoring to thwart the plan of the Almighty and we are ever aware of his influence, it seems to be more natural i to do evil than to do good, and thi because ;he evil power was ever tempting us and seeking our destruc tlon. The speaker said he would pass by many important events in the historv j of the world and speak of the coming of the Son of Man In the Meridian of i time. He said there were more heatn en in Vhe world than Christians, tho work of redemption having been rejected re-jected b larK' numbers of people, but the Christian world recognizes Jesus Christ as the great Exempler of all times His mission pioved one great fact, that the Lord allowed one of His Sons to be born in the flesh, that Goit was His Father in every deed. He taught the plan of redemption and that all who tclieved and obeyed the plan would be saved and those who diso-beyed diso-beyed ,"ould be lost. He taught this very plainly and his teachings were known to the entire then known world one hundred years after His crucifixion cruci-fixion "Christ demonstrated one greai fa t and that. was. that the souls of men livo and only the body dies, and thai all men ould be resurrected sooner or later. Me also taugh. by example the necessity of obeyance to the gospel gos-pel principles as in the incident wht-n he sought baptism at the hands of John and in this He clearly showc 1 that there was no other way or plan the could be accepted." Again the speaker said he would pa68 by many important events, including in-cluding the great work of the le'orm-ers le'orm-ers and come to the time when Joseph Smith went into the woods on a beautiful beau-tiful spring morning to offer up his first vocal prayer. "Do we appreciate appreci-ate the importance of this great event?" the speaker asked It was one of the greatest epochs of the world The Father and the Con appeared ap-peared to him in glorious vision. Some peopre, the speaker said, think It is impossible for Joseph Smith to have translated the Book of Mormon and to have introduced the gospel plan and the priesthood to the world. But, although he was bitterly persecuted and put to death, no one had been able to say that he did not have the vision and that he did not translate, the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith gave to ihe world the same plan that Christ taught, the speaker declared, and he organized a church which was indeed the Church of Christ, he had been told of the Lord that the church should bear His name because It was His church. No other church on earth has the authority to administer in gospel ordinances, te speaker said, their claims to be in sue-cesion sue-cesion of the church founded by Christ was very flimsy and by no means real. We now come, the speaker said, to ; the fateful day of November 11, 191S. when the armistice was sienc-d. which made possible for peace to come to th world, and the non-occurrence of another an-other world war. Seven dayu after tho greatest military power th' world has ever known, could not raise a hand and was beaten to death. TMie power of God. he said, had smitten to earth the powers of autocracy. We may have more calamity, but we do know we have reached a stage whon we know that prophecy has bren fulfilled. ful-filled. In reffrnnc to the part America i played in the great world war. the speaker said, wo did not taste of the awful sufferings to ihe extent that other nations did. but our young men : went into the fight to win and win they did. We did not et into the war for selfish purposes, but thai Justice might come to all mankinu This is the mission of this country, he i said, althought mans ma not believo it The speaker said he did not agree ! with everything President Wilson hail) done or said, but in the main, he did i believe in and support him, and we could not expect any mortal man to ; have don better than President Wit- 1 son had done during the period of the war. |
