Show HIGH PRICES OF RAISINS DUE TO 1 PROHIBITION NEW YORK, Nov. 22. Prevailing high prices of raisins and scarcity of the product in the eastern market are due to increased demand resulting from prohibition, according to testimony testi-mony of E. L. ('haddock, president of ("haddock and company, independent raisin packers, before the federal 'rade commission here today. Chaddock declared that another rea son for prevailing prices was the fact that tho California Associated Raisin company controlled 88 per cent of the Pacific coast raisin acreage and was behind on its deliveries. Counsel for the Associated company declared delays were due principally to car shortage. Oscar B McGlashon, secretary of Mi Ni il ami HiggLns, Chicago, whole-jalers, whole-jalers, charged that the Associated company had forced Chicago wnolc-salers wnolc-salers to accept "opening prices" con-tracta con-tracta whereby the price for fall deln eries was left undetermined until the Associated company commenced de liveries. He claimed wholesalers had thus been compelled to submit to ar bitrary price fixing by the sellers. |
