For eight years l Portland was my home, and very naturally, nat-urally, therefore. I am groat ly attached to that wonderful city of 316,000 pop-ulat pop-ulat ion. There Is, perhaps, no city in America more substantially built than Portland. It's business basis has always been rock-ribbed, it has never known the devastating effects of "wild cat" booms that have hindered the permanent perma-nent growth ot some other western cities. Portland has some of the largest department stores in Ihr west, Lipman, Wolf and company; Aldo: TVostman and King, and Meir and Frank & Co.,! perhaps the leading merchants there.) This tinn will' erect very soon, a ten-J story wholesale house In addition to their great retail establishment. Portland has three great dailies, the Telegram the Journal and the Ore- gonian. These papers are all ably edited, but, without making any insidious insid-ious comparisons, it may be truthfully said that the Oregonian is one of the greatest papers in the United State.-, editorial! f have known it from the days of that marvelous man. Henry Scott, v-ho v as ' i ' the head of the ' re gonii-n for years. For grandeur of natural scenery,' roi l land ran not be surpassed The I historic Columbia, for rugged magnificence, magnifi-cence, surpasses any river in our country The great Columbia highway from Portland to the Dalles, Is a wonderful l)iece of substantial and artistic engi ncering. Every mile of the road is marked by splendid scenic glory "Crown Point" is a wonder. As one t ooks out. from Vista Inn to the waters i ar below or to the river issuing from ( iround the graceful curves of the t mountains, eastward, or to the far s fva west, with its islands and m k bound JJfe shores, washed by the great ColunibM that It - -'It m a sea of gold, hi 1 soul is uplifted and inspired by t"e i ! indescribable splendor Council 're Jt far above Portland, is unsurpassed "J wonder ;md grandeur.
