H Aug. 23 Kilauea. the worlds most active and most accessible volcano, was today to-day viewed by Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels, and officers of tho i i '-sels of the Pacific fleet which brought the cabinet member to Hawaii. The warships came here troni Honolulu where Secretary Daniels dedicated the Pearl Harbor naval drydock. Not th lea.st interesting pari of today's to-day's excursion uas tho 30-mile auto drive from Hilo to the volcano, which took the secretary and naval officers thiough Mivar plantations, quaint native na-tive villages, with nil the atmosphere of ancient Hawaii; and mile.-- of gigan-tic gigan-tic tree ferns and lorests of other tropical plants and tree.- Hawaii, geographically, is the youngest of bc group of islands which take Its name, and Is the only island which still has active volcanoes. Kilauea, the volcano, is on the slope of Mauna Loa. a mountain peak lowering low-ering 13 67'. feet, at an elevation of nearly 4.000 feet above level. The main crater is nearly eight miles in circumference and 600 feet deep inclosing in-closing an area of 2.650 acres, a solidified solidi-fied sea of lava which takes most fantastic fan-tastic shapes 'n the center of this vast sink in the mountain slope Is HalemaumajL or "the bouse of i lasting fire." a groat pit over 1000 feet in diameter where churns and boils a sea of liquid rock, with waves and billows of white-hot lava eternally tearing at the confining walls. The molten lava of the central fire pit rises and talk Si frtaln periods Of the year, sometimes falling 600 feet or more below the rim and at other times cisinc until the fluid roek gushes gush-es in great streams over ihe tloor of the main crater. In recent weeks the volcano has been particularly active and Secretary Daniels and bis companions com-panions found much to Interest them. Near the crater of Kilauea is a sandy plain, covered with huge bout deis vomited up in the eruption of 1790. It was heie that the army of King Keoua of Kau was destroyed by this eruption whtn on its way to attack at-tack the forces of Kamehameha tho Great, who made himself the first, king nt all the islands. This historic plain was traveled by Mr. Daniels and his party on the way to thr tire p;t of the volcano. In modern times ni one has lost his life at Kilauea. |
