Francis "Silk" O'Laughlin, famous as an American league umpire, died at his apartment here today after a short illness of influenza in-fluenza and pneumonia. O'Laughlin had umpired for the American league since its organization and ho had long been rated as one of the famous figures in the baseball world His "ball tub," his long drawn : out "s-t-r-I-k-e," and snappy "fould-cr," 1 are known the country over. These ' and a series of other exclamations ac- 1 corapanied by gestures Indicating a player as safe or out at base were pe- culiar to O'Laughlin. He was born in Rochester, N. Y., 4S years ago.
