Show BOLSHEVIK! AND AMERICANS FIGHT Campaign of Hide and Seek Carried on in Swamps and North Russian Forests. ARCHANGEL, Russia, Monday, Sept. 16. (By the Associated Press) During the past three days there have been intermittent patrol actions between be-tween the American forces and the Bolshevik! on the north Hussion front The American forces have frequently bombarded the enemy, but generally the campaign has been one'of hide and seek in the mosquito-infested swamps and tundra forests. The Bolsheviki are fast retreaters. Yesterday a Bolsheviki plane dropped drop-ped three bombs in an American held village, but without damage. Later it descended within the American lines and was captured. Although some other forces arc participating par-ticipating in the maneuvers, the Americans Amer-icans are largely predominant on this sector. The frontier Is being extended as fast as the engineers are able to repair the damaged railroad. As each i bridge Is repaired an armored train advances, ad-vances, shelling (he Bolshevik armored i train, which generally breaks speed records in retreating and in the blowing blow-ing up of another bridge farther away. Except for the railway line the terrain ter-rain in this region is almost impassable. impas-sable. Forest patrols frequently find themselves waist deep in swamps. Occasionally Oc-casionally Bolshevik pay-ols swoop down on small American patrols, but retreat speedily in the face of the American machine gun and rifle fire. "We should like them to come into our lines in order io try our bayonets on them." said an American "officer today. "But they will not do so and we are not marathon runners." The peasants in the sector work willingly for the allies. An aged peasant peas-ant told I he rorrespondent that the townspeople had everything taken from them and that they were thankful thank-ful that the allies had brought them food. Madame Maria Butchkareff, organizer organiz-er of the Russian woman's battalion has recovered, from tho attack of influenza in-fluenza from which she has been suffering suf-fering and is now working amongthe peasants in this region. oo |
