Mathews, formerly a student stu-dent at the Collegiate institute, a graduate of tho West High school, and member of the Utah National Guard, who is a master electrician in the j 247th aero squadron In England, in a! recent letter to a friend hero, pays trl-1 bute to the Y. M. C. A. and the Red Cross. Sergeant Mathews was in the employ em-ploy of tho United States Mining: company at Santa Ysabel, Chihuahua, during the turbulent days of that com -1 pany with the followers of Villa. Hei Joined tho New Mexico National Guard j and was on the border during tho entire en-tire time that troops were kept there. ' He received an honorable discharge, . which pomiitted him to volunteer for' service in the signal corps, and has: been on the "othor sido" for the past year. Ho say$: "When I was in the states the Y.I M. C. A. was always ray best friend when away from homo; but over here it is more than that, it is my refuge It is home. You know, I never think of the Y. M. C. A. as an organization; it seems human to me a live thing something with a soul. "As for the Red Cross Well, keep your good work up, for you are doing as much as if you were a part of Itj ovor here. He invited me to I go to Red Cross quarters for dinner, I but bofore dinner ho escorted ma to a I bathroom, presented me with plenty of clean towels, turned on the hot water, , and then 'sizing me up, further pre- ' scnted me with a , clean, new suit of , underwear. j "I protested that mine was perfectly i clean.obut my refusaal was unheeded; ho soemed to see clear through me, or at least through my uniform. That gives you an idea of how we are looked look-ed after by that organization.
