Show Is Well Pleased With Care and Health cf Army in France. TOURS. France, Sept. 23. (By the Associated Press.) Major General William C Gorgas, surgeon general of the United States army, who is making a complete Inspection of the medical corps of the American expeditionary forces, said today: "I am very much pleased with the care and health of the troops. Their sanitary condition is good; the sick rate is low and tho wounded are excellently excel-lently cared for. A largo bulk of these men aro getting vscry much better professional pro-fessional care here than Lhey would have had." General Gorgas cited as an example a man whose leg had been crushed in a logging camp, or a farmer's son shot accidentally and pointed out that there would have been serious results had country practitioners treated them at irregular Intervals, often with more or less long delays, while the troops in France have the most skilled surgeons and the foremost physicians attending them with all appliances and conveniences conven-iences as well as trained nurses. "From what I see," concluded the surgeon general, "so far as the medical department is concerned I look forward for-ward to tho troops getting. through the winter very satisfactorily." INFLUENZA IN CAMPS. WASHINGTON. SepL 23. Spanish influenza has made Its appearanec in at least twenty-five army camps over the country. The surgeon general's office announced tonight that tho total number of cases has Increased to 20,-211, 20,-211, including 2225 new cases reported today. Seven camps reported' influenza for tho first time today. Camp Lewis, Wash., reported twenty-two new cases today. The epidemic continues most severe at Camp Devens, Mass., General Gorgas Gor-gas said. Tho total number of cases reported from that camp up to noon today was 10.700. Camn DIx with 189R cases is second. At Camp Devens tho number of pnemonla cases is high, 424 new cases having been reported during tho past four days. Influenza cases reported in western camps, excluding camps reporting today, to-day, for the first time, shows: Logan, OJex., 175; Funston, Kan., 181; and Travis, Tex., 37. |
