Show NO NEW MEN ! FOR SEAL 1EAM Downs' Hands Tied in Procuring Procur-ing Players Because of i Sale Talk. t i I SAN FRANCISCO. Feb. 17. About two weeks from today the managers of the teams in the Coast league will bo rounding up their talent to go to the various training camps, and in every one of the towns except San Francisco there seems to be a well defined de-fined pjan of campaign. San Francisco has been called the backbone of the Coast league, yet with the training season only two weeks off things are all topsy-turvy on the local club. When there should be some tall hustling to land men to take the places of Del Baker, Erickson, Oldham Schal-ler Schal-ler and Fitzgerald, there has been nothing doing, for the good and simple reason that Cal Ewing and oUior. who hold notes against Henry Berry are putting in iheir tirn-2 trying io iDll the club. Cal thinks a deal will be closed next Tuesday, but he may be disappointed again. Timo Is getting short and the man. who buys the club wilL have to bestir himself to got tho right kind of players in time to have them at the training camp. Phil Koerner. first base; Jerry Downs, second base; Roy Corham, shortstop, and Charley Pick, third base, are all expected back, so tho infield in-field will be Intact unless some youngster young-ster Jumps up and noses out one of tho veterans. Jock Calvo is coming back, but men must be found to take tho places of Justin Fitzgerald, Biff Schal-ler Schal-ler and George Maisel, all high class fly chasers; and that is no easy thing to do. Schaller is working at the Union Iron works and sent a very dignified letter announcing his retirement from tho game; but men who have played with him think ho will reconsider when training time comes. Tho Seals are sure to miss Olaf Erickson, for the big fellow won more games than any pitcher in the country last year. His place will be a hard one to fill. If Spider Baum hooks up with1 Marysville to play Sunday ball, another an-other high-class twirler will be gone; the Spider is working on one of tho exemption boards. The hands of Jerry Downs arc tied right now for about all he can do is send letters of inquiry. Until tho club is sold or taken off the market there is not much chance for Jerry to get talent, so for that reason tho fans aro hoping something definite will be dono this week. |
