Show - ALASKA HERRING 5 A NEW INDUSTRY CORDOVA, Alaska, Nov. 20. (By mail.) More than $1,000,000 was added add-ed to Alaska's pay roll and a new industry in-dustry placed on her list by the for merly despised Alaska herring this year. The northern herring came into its own when tho war cut off ihe supply of tho Norwegian fish. Following investigation in-vestigation by a few persons, several barrels of the herring were shipped to tho states whereflioy were tested by government experts and found to bo at least tho equal of the North seas product, if not superior. When the results re-sults of this test became known there was a scramble among Alaskans to seek herring grounds, government experts ex-perts were sent to the north to give instructions in packing and curing the fish, and tho result was that this year more than 50,000 barrels of herring were produced, which sold at from $21 to $25 a barrel. Alaskans in touch with the now industry in-dustry believe that it is but in its in-fancy in-fancy and will develop Into a most iu portant asset of tho territory.
