Show Campaign for Ocean Memorial Starts THE ambition of men in the navy and marine corps for erection of a great navy and marine memorial me-morial on th Potomac river, in Washington, was brought a step nearer near-er completion in New York city at a dinner given by the Navy and Marine Memorial association at the Army and Navy club of New York. Pointing to the seaman, the man who pilots and directs ships of the modern day, and the generations of seamen who have uiude his accomplishments accom-plishments possible, as one of the greatest single forces In the progress of modern civilization. Hear Admiral Bradley A. Flake, U. S. N., retired, told the Navy and Marine Memorial association that the proposed memorial memo-rial must be btfilt to "let the seumun know that the day of hla unrequited service has gone by and that he Is coming into the honor which he merits." "Build a memorial In Washington that shall stand before the nations," Admiral Flske said, "not only as a belated recognition of his work through all the dim and distant past, but also as an assurance of a near and brilliant future." Several hundred navy and inarln officers attended the dinner, at which the progress of the association ia raising funds for th proposed memorial memo-rial was reviewed. Telegrams wishing wish-ing auccess to the movement wer reud from nearly a score of persona prominent In national life, Including several goveniors of states. The memorial, me-morial, to coat approximately $500,-000, $500,-000, will stand on a point in the Potomac, Po-tomac, surrounded by water on thre sides, near the site of th Arlington memorial bridge. Designs have already al-ready been prepared by Begnl del Platta, sculptor, and llnrvey Wiley Corbctt, an architect of New York. Secretary of the Navy Wilbur Is chairman of the honorary national committee, which also includes Theodore Theo-dore lloosevflt, former assistant secretary sec-retary of the navy ; Admiral Edward W. Eberle, Admiral Robert E. Coonta, Admiral Leigh THlnier, MaJ. Gen. John A. Lejeune, commandant of the marine corps; Hear Admiral F. C. Blllnrd, chairman T. V. O'Connor of the shipping ship-ping board and Rear Admiral William S. Benson. Many men and women prominent in public life are on th national committee. |
